Remember That Time Traveler Picture?

Remember that web buzz a while back when someone posted a video of an old film clip seemingly depicting a guy in silent-movie times using a cell phone?  Well, this isn't video, but it's pretty much the same kind of picture.  Why do I get the feeling this won't be nearly as buzzy?

I found this on the web while looking up old pictures of Union Square in NYC at New York in Black and White which is, by the way, an excellent collection of old-time New York City photographs.

What year is this? When were transister radios possible? Could it be a camera? Could he be scratching his face. Too many possibilities to jump to any far fetched conclusions, imo.

Cell phone wouldn't work. There would be no switch or towers for service. Not to mention he would draw a lot of attention walking around speaking into a device no one had ever seen before.

Well, it could be a special time machine phone ;) ... Other things it could be ... Cigarette/cigar/binoculars/inelegant frozen moment in time.
