About NYC Media Bypass
NYC Media Bypass is an experiment to see how narrowly the line between media content generators (events and
people typically referred to as "newsmakers") and information consumers such as you and I, can be drawn at a
grassroots level here on the web.
Using a process of direct press release review and other forms of raw content posted to the web involving
both mundane and dramatic events, NYC Media Bypass hopes to inject a different dimension to the regular news cycle.
Sources
NYC Media Bypass relies exclusively on primary sources to generate its content. The goal is to eliminate
any reference to standard media, mainstream or otherwise. The resources and technology exist today that
many entities, police, legal, private, and otherwise, can speak directly to the public if they so choose.
As an absolute baseline, NYC Media Bypass systematically reviews and regurgitates press releases by various
bodies such as police, fire, and district attorney offices, adding appropriate depth and side links where
appropriate or interesting to do so, to other directly reviewable material related to each entry.
Secondarily, NYC Media Bypass believes that with the proliferation of cell phone cameras and other
consumer media devices, that video and photographs of incidents generated randomly throughout New York City
can be collected and conveyed by anyone. The facts surrounding each incident don't always need to be absolutely known, but the
occurrence of activity can be documented and reported and perhaps with added depth by reader
contributions later. First person accounts as posted via Twitter, social networking site, and media accounts
like You Tube, are culled aggressively in this respect.
What Do YOU Know?
NYC Media Bypass relies upon and encourages those individuals associated with any story or event mentioned
at this blog, to add depth by making sure to post their comment. This website and blog bypass the media
and can be a refreshing way to tell others what you know to add depth, sympathy, or condemnation to each
developing story. Please do not hesitate to contribute and set the record straight directly in your own
words.
About the Publisher
My name is David Pinero and I have long been interested in online publishing and all of the dynamics that
go along with it. While I typically enjoy writing and developing publishing software (this very website
is built using my own Battle Blog engine), this project is a departure in that it
focuses on the exercise of content gathering and sharing at direct and/or street level.
