During today's development tour I noticed something new mounted to the ceiling of a streetcar. It looks like one of those new on board security cameras.



Protecting a range of threats against public transport: Vandals, litigious passengers, and terrorists

Terrorism is a concern, sure. But our streetcars enjoy high quality and polished wood benches and side paneling. We did it right in Tampa folks. The thought of casual vandals doing something as minor as etching a profanity is completely unacceptable; so I tend to appreciate them more realistically as a deterrent against something like that.

You see these cameras popping up more and more on public transport vehicles. That new BRT bus touring through here had one, for instance. If you like some general information, I found this page to be particularly informative.

Update 10/4/07 - It looks like New York City's Mayor Bloomberg agrees with these Tampa Rail sentiments.
